Los Angeles City Council Votes Unanimously to Require Businesses to Rehire Former Employees

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a measure giving specified workers a “right of recall.” Employees who work in stadiums, concert halls, hotels, and airport-affiliated businesses, as well as janitorial workers, may be covered by the ordinance.

The Council’s proposed ordinance, which applies to the City of Los Angeles (though other cities and counties may follow suit) affords furloughed or terminated employees a stronger sense of security. For example, the ordinance should prevent or discourage employers from replacing older employees with younger, cheaper workers after the COVID-19 pandemic recedes.

Los Angeles' Mayor Eric Garcetti has stated he will sign the ordinance into law.
